Hotel Retrofit into a Women’s Shelter

  • Project Type: Commerical
  • Location: Calgary, Alberta
  • SIS Panel: MgO SIS Panel – Product Code SH1

About this Project

If you’re a Calgarian, you might be familiar with the Town & Country Hotel along 17th Avenue in the Southeast. The hotel is an iconic landmark that holds many memories, both good and bad. Despite its storied history, this cherished establishment is being transformed into a beacon of hope and sanctuary for vulnerable and unhoused women, children, and seniors in our community. The project’s slogan is to bring the hotel from “notorious to glorious”.

We were honored to play a key role in this project and offered our expertise and guidance surrounding the building’s non-combustible balcony assembly. To address this challenge in a timely and cost-effective manner, we supplied a Magnesium Oxide (MgO) SIS Panel, an insulated sheathing solution with exceptional fire resistive properties.

The MgO SIS Panel was the primary fire-resistance in the balcony assembly, with the other components being metal studs and interior type x drywall. This simple but effective solution provides a one-hour fire rating with the bonus of enhanced sound resistance.

The Solution

Our dedicated team closely monitored progress with routine visits, doing everything in our power to ensure a smooth installation and create a relationship with the installers. Feedback from the installers was overwhelmingly positive, recognizing the benefits of the MgO SIS Panel not only for its ease of installation but also for its transformative impact on enhancing living standards through superior insulation.

After the MgO SIS Panels were installed, a peel-and-stick Weather-Resistive Barrier (WRB) and a robust metal cladding system were installed into the MgO SIS Panel.

As our role on the project wraps up, we eagerly look forward to working further with the builder on future projects. With an anticipated move-in date set for October 2024, the Town & Country Hotel’s rebirth as a shelter promises to herald a new chapter of compassion, resilience, and community support.
